Kyle Akin: The tidal streams at Kyle Akin vary significantly between neaps and springs and are affected by air pressure, wind and precipitation. The 1958 Admiralty Pilot presents a wonderful and unique contour plot that attempts to summarise this variation, and subsequent versions contained a lengthy table. With the building of the bridge, tidal information appeared on the chart which shows some irregularities but does not capture the differences between neaps and springs. The following is a 'best guess', drawing on several sources, all times relative to high water at Ullapool: The east-going tide begins at -3:20 (or -4:05?) at Springs, -0:25 at Neaps. The west-going tide begins at +4:20 (or +3:50?) at Springs, +5:40 at Neaps. For times between this, interpolate the time of the west-going stream starting. However, for the east-going stream start, assume times are as springs until a tidal factor of 90%, and as neaps for less than this - i.e. the east-going stream begins as at neaps until very close to springs. The westerly flow is stronger, with speeds at springs of 2-3 knots. The easterly flow is weaker at 1.5-2.3 knots. At Springs, the channel under the smaller bridge to the north of the main Skye bridge flows north west from +3:45 to -3:45. Flow is then weak and variable until -1:15 when it turns south east. Flows in this channel likely do not exceed 1.5 knots.
Strome narrows, Loch Carron: The east going stream begins at 5 hours and 50 minutes after high water at Ullapool. The west going stream begins at 10 minutes before high water at Ullapool. The flow reaches a speed of 3 knots at springs. Streams are insignificant elsewhere in the Loch. Some sources state that the streams turn 15 minutes later.
Loch Carron and Loch Kishorn: Tidal stream are not significant except in the Strome narrows.
Caolas Mor: The south-east going stream begins at 5 hours and 50 minutes after high water at Ullapool. The north-west going stream begins at 10 minutes before high water at Ullapool. The flow reaches a speed of 1 knots at springs. Some sources state that the streams turn 15 minutes later.
Crowlin Harbour: The tide runs strongly in the northern entrance to the narrow harbour between Eilean Meadhanach and Eilean Mor. The southern entrance to the harbour dries 3.1 m and should be covered in the upper half of the tide - i.e. 3 hours either side of high water.
South west of the Crowlin Islands: The south-east going stream begins at 5 hours and 50 minutes after high water at Ullapool. The north-west going stream begins at 10 minutes before high water at Ullapool. The flow reaches a speed of 0.5 knots at springs.
Between Scalpay and Longay: The south-east going stream begins at 6 hours and 5 minutes after high water at Ullapool. The north-west going stream begins at 5 minutes after high water at Ullapool. The flow reaches a speed of 2 knots at springs.
Caolas Pabay: Between Pabay and the Isle of Skye: The north-east going stream begins at 5 hours and 35 minutes after high water at Ullapool. The south-west going stream begins at 25 minutes before high water at Ullapool. The flow reaches a speed of 1 knots at springs.
Caolas Scalpay: The east going stream begins at 5 hours and 5 minutes after high water at Ullapool. The west going stream begins at 1 hours and 10 minutes before high water at Ullapool. The flow reaches a speed of 1 knots at springs. Some sources state that the streams turn 45 minutes later.
Caol Mor: The north-east going stream begins at 6 hours and 5 minutes after high water at Ullapool. The south-west going stream begins at 5 minutes after high water at Ullapool. The flow reaches a speed of 0.5 knots at springs.
Loch Sligachan entrance: The east going stream begins at 30 minutes before high water at Ullapool. The west going stream begins at 5 hours and 50 minutes after high water at Ullapool. Within the loch, there are no significant streams.
Narrows of Raasay: The south-east going stream begins at 6 hours and 5 minutes after high water at Ullapool. The north-west going stream begins at 5 minutes before high water at Ullapool. The south-east going stream reaches a speed of 1.3 knots at springs. The north-west going stream reaches a speed of 1.4 knots at springs.
Inner Sound: The south going stream begins at 6 hours and 5 minutes after high water at Ullapool. The north going stream begins at 5 minutes before high water at Ullapool. The flow reaches a speed of 1 knots at springs. Times vary throughout the sound, and some sources give the times around an hour earlier.
East side of Raasay and Rona: The north north-east going stream begins at 55 minutes before high water at Ullapool. The south south-west going stream begins at 5 hours and 5 minutes after high water at Ullapool. The flow reaches a speed of 1 knots at springs.
Caol Rona: The south-east going stream begins at 4 hours and 50 minutes after high water at Ullapool. The north-west going stream begins at 1 hours and 10 minutes before high water at Ullapool. The flow reaches a speed of 2 knots at springs.
Between Portree and Staffin: The north going stream begins at 1 hours and 15 minutes before high water at Ullapool. The south going stream begins at 4 hours and 40 minutes after high water at Ullapool. The flow reaches a speed of 0.5 knots at springs.
North end of the Inner Sound: The north going stream begins at 55 minutes before high water at Ullapool. The south going stream begins at 5 hours and 5 minutes after high water at Ullapool. The flow reaches a speed of 1 knots at springs.
Loch Torridon: The south-east going stream begins at 6 hours and 5 minutes before high water at Ullapool. The north-west going stream begins at 5 minutes before high water at Ullapool. The flow reaches a speed of 1 knots at springs.
Narrows between Loch Shieldaig and Upper Loch Torridon: The north-east going stream begins at 6 hours and 20 minutes before high water at Ullapool. The south-west going stream begins at 20 minutes before high water at Ullapool. The flow reaches a speed of 2 knots at springs.
Inner Sound testing area: Underwater weapons testing is carried out in the Inner Sound (MOD BUTEC). If leaving the shoreline, it may be prudent to monitor VHF channel 13. Contact: 0800 015 0594.

Strome Ferry: (NG 865 347) g Slipway. Unclear if it is possible to park nearby - in the worst case, there is parking at a viewpoint on the main road about a kilometre away.
Lochcarron: (NG 903 397) g Roadside parking near village hall. At low water, it may be easier to launch at the turning area (no parking) at the end of the road to Slumbay Island.
Strome Castle: (NG 863 354) g Slipway at end of road. It may be possible to leave a car close by.
Ardaneaskan: (NG 834 352) g Short walk from road to sea. Park in a small car park 250m further down the road.
Ardarroch: (NG 838 396) g Small parking area by the foreshore. May be a long walk at low tide.
Toscaig: (NG 710 378) g Parking on pier at end of road. Launch on rocky foreshore nearby, awkward at low water.
Aird Dhubh: (NG 710 406) g Slipway, parking area 50m to the west at the junction where the small road to the slipway comes off.

Sand: (NG 683 489) g Parking area at end of public road. 400m carry down to beach.

Torridon: (NG 885 570) g Small pull off from the road, with space for 1 or 2 cars.
Inveralligin: (NG 845 575) g Pier, space to leave one or two cars.
Lower Diabig: (NG 798 599) g Slipway by pier, small parking area nearby.
Broadford: (NG 646 235) g Small parking area by pier and beach. Large car park 300m west along main road.
Luib: (NG 564 279) g Space to leave a car or two near a bridge over a river flowing into the sea. Likely to be a slippery walk over gravel at low tide.
Head of Loch Ainort: (NG 542 280) g Limited parking by recycling centre.
Sconser: (NG 525 323) g Limited parking by ferry slip. Failing that, there is a layaway on the main road just to the east. If ferry slip is busy, an alternative launch point might be near the fish farming pier to the east.
