Tidal streams

Long Bohur: Around 1 mile east of Little Saltee, the flow is affected by eddies: The east north-east going stream begins at 30 minutes after high water at Cobh. The west south-west going stream begins at 6 hours after high water at Cobh. The east north-east going stream reaches a speed of 2.5 knots at springs. The west south-west going stream reaches a speed of 2.6 knots at springs. Overfalls form to the north and south of Great Saltee and over the shallows to the east.

North of Little Saltee: Over Saint Patrick's Bridge The east going stream begins at 2 hours and 50 minutes before high water at Cobh. The west going stream begins at 3 hours and 30 minutes after high water at Cobh. The flow reaches a speed of 4.5 knots at springs. Rough water forms over the shallows extending from Kilmore Quay to Little Saltee. Some sources give the east-going tide here as starting at 5 hours and 10 minutes after high water at Cobh.

Saltee Sound: Times for the Sound are uncertain, and it may be that the streams in the Sound turn as for St. Patrick's Bridge to the north. The east going stream begins at 35 minutes before high water at Cobh. The west going stream begins at 5 hours and 35 minutes after high water at Cobh. The flow reaches a speed of 3.5 knots at springs. The tide runs especially strongly across Seber Bridge, a shallows to the north of Great Saltee.

North west of Great Saltee: Around 1 mile north-west of Great Saltee, the flow is affected by eddies, such that the stream runs (all times referenced to high water at Cobh) east from -3:00 to +3:35, south east from -0:30 to +6:05. The flow attains a speed of 2 knots. It is variable from +5:30 to -0:20.

South west of the Saltee Islands: The east going stream begins at 30 minutes after high water at Cobh. The west going stream begins at 6 hours and 10 minutes before high water at Cobh. The flow reaches a speed of 2.5 knots at springs.

Hook Head to Crossfarnoge Point: Inshore streams are weak.

Offshore between Hook Head and Great Saltee: The east going stream begins at 50 minutes before high water at Cobh. The west going stream begins at 5 hours and 35 minutes after high water at Cobh. The flow reaches a speed of 1.5 knots at springs.

Eddy East side of Hook Head: It is probably that an eddy forms here during the east-going stream, but there is little tidal flow to the east of Hook Head.

Hook Head: The east going stream begins at 1 hours and 20 minutes before high water at Cobh. The west going stream begins at 3 hours and 50 minutes after high water at Cobh. The flow reaches a speed of 2 knots at springs. There is some uncertainty about these times. A race forms, especially between 4 hours and 20 minutes after high water at Cobh until 4 hour and 55 minutes before high water at Cobh, when the west going stream meets the south-going stream from Waterford Harbour. The race is complex. It may extend south from the headland (the Tower Race), or all the way across the harbour entrance to the west.

Outside Waterford Harbour: The east going stream begins at 1 hours and 20 minutes before high water at Cobh. The west going stream begins at 4 hours and 50 minutes after high water at Cobh. The flow reaches a speed of 1 knots at springs.

Eddy west of Hook Head: On the north-going stream in Waterford Harbour and the west-going stream at Hook Head an eddy likely forms along the coastline to the west side of Hook Head.

Waterford Harbor entrance: 800m south-east of Creadan Head: The north north-east going stream begins at 4 hours and 25 minutes before high water at Cobh. The south south-west going stream begins at 45 minutes after high water at Cobh. The north north-east going stream reaches a speed of 0.6 knots at springs. The south south-west going stream reaches a speed of 1.5 knots at springs. The north north-east going stream sets to the west side of the Harbour from Portally Head to Creadan Head, such that there is little flow on the east side of the channel. The south south-west going stream runs mainly on the east side of the harbour from Duncannon Point to Hook Head. The out-going flow can create good conditions for surfing when opposing any swell from the south.

Eddy South of Creadan Head: An eddy here flows north north-east starting 5 hours and 25 minutes before high water at Cobh. The eddy runs from Portally Head to Creadan Head.

Creadan Head: Close to the Head: The tide flows north and south. The flow reaches a speed of 3 knots at springs.

River Barrow, entrance: The south-east going stream begins at 30 minutes after high water at Cobh. The north-west going stream begins at 4 hours and 20 minutes before high water at Cobh. The flow reaches a speed of 2.5 knots at springs.

River Barrow, Ferry Point: The north going stream begins at 4 hours and 20 minutes before high water at Cobh. The south going stream begins at 30 minutes after high water at Cobh. The flow reaches a speed of 2.3 knots at springs.

River Barrow, Dollar Point: The north-east going stream begins at 4 hours and 20 minutes before high water at Cobh. The south-west going stream begins at 30 minutes after high water at Cobh. The north-east going stream reaches a speed of 1.8 knots at springs. The south-west going stream reaches a speed of 2 knots at springs.

River Barrow, Rochestown Spit: The north north-east going stream begins at 4 hours and 20 minutes before high water at Cobh. The south south-west going stream begins at 30 minutes after high water at Cobh. The north north-east going stream reaches a speed of 2.5 knots at springs. The south south-west going stream reaches a speed of 2 knots at springs.

River Barrow, New Ross: The north north-east going stream begins at 4 hours before high water at Cobh. The south south-west going stream begins at 45 minutes after high water at Cobh. The flow reaches a speed of 2 knots at springs.

Saint Mullins: The south-east going stream begins at 2 hours after high water at Cobh.

Swines Head: At Swines Head and off Waterford Harbour entrance: The east going stream begins at 1 hours and 20 minutes before high water at Cobh. The west going stream begins at 4 hours and 50 minutes after high water at Cobh. The flow reaches a speed of 1 knots at springs.

Burke's Islet: Off Burke's Islet, a small group of islets 2.5 miles west of Tremor Bay: The east going stream begins at 1 hours and 50 minutes before high water at Cobh. The west going stream begins at 4 hours and 5 minutes after high water at Cobh. The flow reaches a speed of 0.5 knots at springs.

Dungarvan Harbour: Near Carrickapane: The tide flows east and west. The east going stream reaches a speed of 1 knots at springs. The west going stream reaches a speed of 0.5 knots at springs.

Dungarvan Harbour, by Wyse's Point: The tide flows east south-east and west north-west. The flow reaches a speed of 1 knots at springs.. The streams are weaker on the south side of the bay.

Off Helvick Head: The north-east going stream begins at 2 hours and 35 minutes before high water at Cobh. The south-west going stream begins at 3 hours and 50 minutes after high water at Cobh. Streams are weak.

Mine Head: The north-east going stream begins at 2 hours and 15 minutes before high water at Cobh. The south-west going stream begins at 2 hours and 35 minutes after high water at Cobh. The flow reaches a speed of 1.3 knots at springs. Streams are weaker in the bays away from the headland.

Ram Head: The north-east going stream begins at 3 hours and 55 minutes before high water at Cobh. The south-west going stream begins at 2 hours and 50 minutes after high water at Cobh. Streams are weak.

Notes

Waterford Harbour Radio: Waterford Harbour Radio operates on VHF 14. It is sensible to monitor this channel if paddling in the River Suir, as large vessels use the channel.

Access/Egress

Ballyhealy Beach: (SL 910 640) g Sandy parking area between road and beach.

Kilmore Quay eastern beach: (SL 864 627) g Large beach, with a long walk to the sea at low water. two small car parks, one on the north side of the harbour, the other just up Kilmore road.

Kilmore Quay slipway: (SL 864 626) g Slipway into harbour usable throughout tidal range. Limited parking just to the east on the north side of the harbour. Launching charge payable - this can be avoided by using the beach just to the west.

Kilmore Quay, west pier beach: (SL 862 626) g Beach just west of the western harbour pier, accessed by a short carry over boulders. Car park with height barrier, some parking available outside, often used by camper vans.

Cullenstown Beach: (SL 777 681) g There are two car parks. The main one is by the beach but has a height restriction. The other is 150m to the west, with no height restriction, but a slightly longer and steeper walk down to the beach.

Bannow Island Beach: (SL 725 679) g A small road / track leads off the road under a height restrictor and 150m down to a parking area by the beach.

Grange Beach: (SL 701 666) g Just before the L8715 turns north to parallel the beach, it is possible to park a few cars on the roadside. Beach is acessed via a step ramp. The carry can be hard work, especially at low tide.

Fethard Quay: (SL 705 659) g Small harbour with slipway. Very limited parking, although it may be possible to leave a vehicle or two with due consideration to local harbour users.

Baginbun Beach: (SL 699 642) g Path from the end of the road leads 60m down to beach. Extensive parking has recently been added along the road. The beach is well sheltered.

Carnival Beach: (SL 693 641) g Steep carry from the road end 80m down to the beach. Good sized paring area at the end of the road. Surf in southerly wind or swell.

Sandeel Bay: (SL 662 627) g Road run down to the beach. Very limited parking at the last left turn on the road.

Slade Harbour: (SL 641 598) g Harbour with slipway, dries at low water. Slipway is used by lifeboat, so keep clear as much as possible. Plenty of space to park around the harbour. Toilets close to south-east corner of harbour.

Doornoge Point, Pursheen Bay: (SL 627 595) g Small gravel parking areas from which a grassy ramp leads down to a narrow bay. Swell from certain directions may make launching impractical here.

Lumdins Bay: (SL 649 622) g Beach accessible from end of farm track (public access) which is well sheltered. Limited parking along farm track.

Dollar Bay: (SL 651 667) g Road leading down to beach. Limited parking.

Booley Bay Beach: (SL 651 672) g Road leading down to beach with limited parking. Dollar beach to the south may be a little better, but Duncannon to the north will likely be easier.

Duncannon Strand: (SL 632 695) g A small road, along which parking is possible, leads down to the beach. It is possible to drive right onto the beach, but be aware that the beach floods at high water. Further parking along the roads above the beach.

Duncannon Harbour: (SL 630 698) g Harbour with slipway. Parking is possible, but avoid blocking access.

Arthurstown Quay: (SL 620 718) g May be possible to park along Strand Road leading to the Quay. Launching possible on slipway or on beach to south. Dries to nasty mud at low water - the beach may be a little better, but Duncannon is preferred.

Passage East: (SL 607 719) g Park on the east side of the harbour, but launch on the beach to the east, instead of using the drying harbour itself.

Ballyhack: (SL 610 723) g Some parking on the pier by the ferry slip. Launch from shingle beach south of the pier. More parking to the north in the village.

New Ross Boat Club: (SL 636 892) g Slipway usable in the top three quarters of the tide. Adjacent parking and more on nearby streets.

Saint Mullins: (SL 655 992) g Large parking area and picnic area by the river. Slipway, usable for at least the top half of the tidal range.

Dunmore east, Adventure Centre Slipway: (SL 586 619) g This public slipway is reached by driving around much of the harbour. Access the harbour via either Harbour Road or Island Road (one way) then drive clockwise around the harbour. Turn left just after the Waterford Harbour Sailing club to reach the slipway, which will be busy in summer. Parking available around the harbour - it may be easiest to park a little way away from the slipway and carry to it to avoid getting in the way.

Saleens: (SL 524 627) g Car park with access to bay just inside the Back Strand entrance.

Tramore slipway: (SL 472 632) g Slipway in small harbour. Boats can be dropped, but be careful in case the lifeboat needs to launch. Small parking area on the road above from which a path leads back to the harbour.

Newtown Cove: (SL 466 621) g Car park on top of cliff from which steep steps zig-zag steeply down 100m to a sheltered cove. It is almost certainly easier to launch in Tremor just to the north!

Garrarus Strand: (SL 442 613) g Car park at end of road, short ramp leading onto beach.

Kilfarrasy Beach: (SL 421 614) g Plentiful parking at end of road from which a short ramp leads onto the beach.

Annestown: (SL 395 621) g Good sized car park with low height barrier. Rather limited parking outside barrier. May be possible to leave a car in the village to the west.

Benvoy Beach: (SL 385 623) g Some parking at the end of a narrow lane. Steps lead down to beach. Likely an awkward carry, but no height barrier.

Boatstrand: (SL 372 620) g Slipway into drying harbour - usable for kayakers at all states of the tide. Parking rather limited.

Kilmurrin Cove: (SL 362 624) g Parking area above the beach from which a ramp leads down 70m to the beach.

Bunmahon Strand: (SL 327 625) g Small car park at west end of town, off the corner where the R675 turns sharply north. Ramp onto beach. Much larger car park by playground 250m east, but the carry to the sea is longer from there.

Ballydowane Cove: (SL 302 620) g Parking at the end of the road from which a path leads a short way onto the beach.

Ballyvoony Cove: (SL 277 617) g Parking area and picnic site at a chicane in the road by a shingle beach.

Stradbally Cove: (SL 264 614) g Parking along road and on top end of beach. Long carry at low tide, but very sheltered.

Ballyvoyle Cove: (SL 228 597) g Not an ideal launch spot. It may be possible to drop boats on a small pull off the road just to the east of the bridge. Parking for a few cars 350m to the west just before the main road. Shingle beach at river mouth with limited shelter.

Clonea Lower: (SL 209 590) g Parking area at east end of beach, short ramp onto beach, 200m or more carry at low tide.

Clonea Strand: (SL 204 585) g Two car parks, one just by the beach, another 200m to the west.

Ballinclamper Beach: (SL 201 578) g Large car park by beach.

Ballinard Beach: (SL 198 571) g Parking area at end of road with short ramp leading onto beach, rocks at low water.

Ballinacourty Harbour: (SL 185 576) g Slipway into drying area behind pier, good parking. Said to be one of the better local launch spots.

Ballynagaul: (SL 186 538) g Pier with slipway and adjacent beach. A few parking spaces available. There may be a 2-300m walk to the water at low tide. Helvick, just to the east, may be a better option.

Helvick: (SL 201 541) g Lifeboat slipway in small harbour usable throughout the tidal range. Parking and toilets nearby.

Glencorrin Beach: (SL 093 461) g Parking area at end of road by beach.

Ballyquin Beach: (SL 084 457) g Parking area at end of road from which a path runs steeply down to a small cove.

Ballinamona Bay Beach: (SL 073 445) g Care parking at end of road by beach. Height barrier.

Ardmore beach: (SL 070 436) g Car park with height barrier by beach. More parking with no height restriction just to the east. Toilets.

Ardmore boat cove: (SL 072 434) g Slipway in small harbour. Runs onto sand at low tide, but still usable. Rather limited parking along the road above.

Goat Island beach: (SL 042 431) g Car park at end of road, from which a track leads down to the beach.

Whiting Bay East: (SL 038 438) g Car park at end of road by beach. A sign on the road indicates that this is not a public car park, but there appears to be not attempt to discourage its use.

Whiting Bay centre: (SL 035 440) g Large parking area at end of road by beach.
